Job Title: DIGITAL PRODUCT & DESIGN MANAGER
Reports To: Managing Editor, Kiplinger.com
FLSA Status: Exempt
Department: 8746-New Media

SUMMARY:
Envisions and executes the design and day-to-day art needs of Kiplinger.com and related digital properties (including our mobile site and apps) and coordinates the development of new interactive tools and features.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include the following (other duties may be assigned at the discretion of the Managing Editor and/or Director of New Media):

  • Leads the redesign of Kiplinger.com and associated digital properties, including our mobile site and apps
  • Researches, sizes/crops, and uploads images for use on top-level pages of Kiplinger.com and in a steady volume of slide shows, quizzes, and other features
  • Maintains relationships with cost-effective sources of stock art
  • Defines business and functional requirements for new and updated tools, features, and functionality on Kiplinger.com, in collaboration with appropriate subject-matter experts and stakeholders
  • Establishes the design of individual new features and functionality
  • Coordinates photography of new Kiplinger staffers and columnists for head shots used on Kiplinger.com
  • Establishes and communicates guidelines and best practices for re-use of images on Kiplinger.com and partner sites
  • Responds to partner-site and media requests for Kiplinger logos, screen shots, and other art used in cross-promotion of Kiplinger content
  • Supports the Kiplinger.com advertising and business-development teams in designing mockups and proposals, as necessary
  • Designs house ads for Kiplinger.com in collaboration with Kiplinger marketing colleagues

Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; plus a minimum of 3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Programming Skills:
Ideal candidates will be proficient in Web-design software such as Dreamweaver and should be familiar with CSS.

Computer Skills:
Adobe Creative Suite 5 (and below), experience with website content management systems (CMS), Microsoft Office suite

ART DIRECTOR

Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine, the leading independent magazine of personal finance, seeks an Art Director.

DUTIES

  • Set and maintain the magazine's high standards of design, photography, illustration and production.
  • Manage the magazine’s art department, including personnel and budgets.
  • Supervise development and execution of covers for the magazine and special issues.
  • Design or review/approve page layouts of all monthly magazine and special newsstand issue content.
  • Work with photo director in choosing photographers, and assign illustration.
  • Manage workflow to ensure deadlines are firmly set and consistently met.
  • Collaborate with the rest of the staff on a daily basis.
  • Participate with senior editorial staff on story development.
  • Manage and oversee redesigns, custom publishing, marketing and and company branding projects as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of publishing experience in designing or art-directing magazines.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in hiring and managing designers and creating and maintaining a budget.
  • Expert-level skills in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop for Mac. Experience in InDesign Digital Publishing software is an advantage.
  • Sophisticated knowledge of photography, illustration and typography.
  • Exceptional organization skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to manage a high volume of work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Desire to lead and mentor others to help them perform and grow.
  • Talent for balancing fun and professionalism, creativity and focus.

WRITER/RESEARCH REPORTER

The Kiplinger Organization, one of America’s most respected business and personal-finance publishers, is seeking a bright, motivated, inquisitive individual for an entry-level research reporter position on our Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine staff. The reporter will fact-check articles, contribute content to the magazine and Kiplinger.com Web site, and provide research and reporting assistance to writers.

Applicant must have a B.A. in Journalism or related field. Excellent fact-checking, research, reporting and writing skills. Strong analytical, quantitative and communication skills. Must be able to work well as part of a team under the pressure of deadlines. Good computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Excel, are essential. Familiarity with database applications and social media is a plus.
